Training Adult Learners PDF Print

Related to, but more complex than making presentations is the art and science of training – teaching others new content, skills, or attitudes/values. Teaching others new content relies heavily on skills in the presentation of information; COR’s Basic Certification in Training Adult Learners (T), therefore, encompasses all of the Presentation Competencies.

However, training others in a skill means teaching a change in behaviors, and content knowledge alone is insufficient in accomplishing this goal. Teaching others to develop new attitudes or values is even more complex, as these kinds of attributes often are not learned in traditional classroom settings.

Training also involves skilled use of questioning and facilitating effective discussions and collaborative work on tasks. Therefore, the Facilitation Competencies also are included in the Training Competencies list as well.

COR’s Basic Training Certification equips individuals in the core competencies of training for content knowledge, increased skills, and related attitude change. The necessary competencies in this area are:

  • All Foundational Competencies plus

  • All Presentation Competencies plus

  • All Facilitation Competencies plus

  • These Training content competencies (TC):
TC1: Sufficient knowledge base on topic of presentation to teach to others
TC2: Knowledge of principles of effective instruction
TC3: Knowledge of different principles for teaching information, skills, and attitudes

  • These Training skill competencies (TS):
TS1: Able to appropriately use a variety of instructional methods
TS2: Ability to vary instruction to fit diverse learning styles and levels of learners
TS3: Ability to create an environment of security within the training situation
TS4: Able to assess group learning, both formatively and summatively

  • These Training dispositional competencies (TD):
TD1: Consistently honors both the learner and the learning process

COR will provide at least one workshop per year which addresses the competencies in each area of certification, although individuals are not required to participate in order to apply for Basic Certification in any area. Demonstration of the competencies required for this basic certification can be achieved through the portfolio process
